Emerging Tobacco Products

Companies continue to develop new products, including e-cigarettes and oral nicotine pouches, that are changing the commercial tobacco product landscape. While we endorse the important public health strategy of harm minimization and recognize that these new products may be beneficial to smokers who completely switch from combustible tobacco, they still pose health risks and nonsmokers should never use them. With 10% of high school students currently vaping, many of whom were never smokers, new tobacco products are threatening to addict a new generation to nicotine. Flavors, which have been proven to attract young people, are common characteristics of these products.
