Assistant Vice President and Managing Director, Grants
Karen Martin oversees grantmaking activities at Truth Initiative, designs effective grant programs to advance Truth Initiative’s mission and ensures that the funds awarded to grantee organizations are making a significant impact in building a tobacco-free generation.
Martin has been with Truth Initiative since 2001 and has had a hand in several of the organization’s major successes, including strengthening tobacco-free policies at community colleges and minority-serving colleges and universities and launching Truth Initiative’s innovative digital quit-smoking program BecomeAnEX.
Martin has extensive experience developing and implementing multi-million-dollar grant programs in topic areas such as health, education and international development. Before joining Truth Initiative, she was the grants director for the medical center campus of Miami Dade College, the largest institution of higher education in the U.S. She also worked in Russia during and after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, serving as grants director for the Open Society Foundations and overseeing a USAID-funded grants program for Abt Associates. Martin is a graduate of Columbia University and the University of Michigan.
