What is hookah?

Hookah is a waterpipe which is used to smoke flavored tobacco called shisha. Hookah is generally perceived as safer compared to cigarettes, but hookah smoke contains many of the same harmful chemicals found in cigarette smoke such as nicotine, tar and heavy metals. One hookah session can expose users to large amounts of smoke and nicotine, contributing to nicotine addiction and other health concerns. Increased awareness of the risks of hookah use is an important step in helping people make informed decisions. 

  • Despite common misconceptions, hookah smoke can contain many of the same harmful chemicals found in cigarette smoke such as nicotine, tar, and heavy metals. 
  • An average one-hour hookah session can expose users to as much smoke as 100 cigarettes. 
  • Black Americans are disproportionately impacted by hookah use. 
  • Frequent hookah users are more likely to be young adults ages 18 to 24. 
  • Social use, flavors, and perceptions of reduced harm contribute to hookah’s appeal.
