Bio

Nancy Brown has been chief executive officer of the American Heart Association since 2008. The association is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to preventing, treating and defeating cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Under Brown’s leadership, AHA established the first-ever definition of “cardiovascular health” and announced its 2020 goal of improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent and reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent.

During her tenure as CEO, Brown has led the association to many significant advances, including launching the Institute for Precision Cardiovascular Medicine, an initiative focused on personalized medicine that includes: MyResearchLegacy™, which puts patients and their needs at the center of scientific research; One Brave Idea™, which aims to end coronary heart disease and its consequences; and the Center for Accelerated Drug Discovery™, which uses computing technology to validate targeted drug hypotheses and reduce time to market of new therapies by as much as 50 percent. Brown also created and co-chairs the association’s CEO Roundtable, which is comprised of CEOs from the largest and most influential corporations in America and drives new solutions for improving health in the workplace and in communities.

Brown serves as co-chairman of the Health Governors Community of the World Economic Forum and as a member of the boards of directors of the World Economic Forum Center for the 4th Industrial Revolution, the Coalition to Transform Advanced Care, Research!America, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and the Valentin Fuster-Mount Sinai Foundation for Science, Health and Empowerment. She also serves as a member of the Qualcomm Life Advisory Board, the Phillips Advisory Board and Leadership18. She is a past chairman of the board of the National Health Council.

Brown has served on the Truth Initiative board of directors since 2013.
