Youth and young adults are uniquely susceptible to social and environmental influences to use tobacco. Factors such as parental smoking, peer group social influences, educational attainment and socioeconomic status affect youth initiation and continued smoking. Decades of pervasive tobacco industry advertising and promotions that linked cigarettes to beauty, sex, money and power have rooted tobacco deeply into American culture. Truth Initiative is addressing the cultural causes of youth smoking and countering Big Tobacco by encouraging young people to make the fight against tobacco their own.
