Briceño “Brice” Bowrey, a Concord, North Carolina native, graduated with a dual degree in public health and history from East Carolina University. In addition to his classes, Bowrey served as an academic mentor, history tutor and the coordinator for his university’s tobacco-free campus initiative.
Bowrey became interested in tobacco control after studying the history of tobacco for a research project. Additionally, through his coursework in public health, he became aware of the vast disparities related to tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.
Since then, Bowrey has continued to participate in field work and research that aim to reduce the prevalence of tobacco at the local, regional and national level, including researching the history of tobacco legislation in North Carolina, working on the development of culturally competent materials for quitting tobacco for the ECU School of Dental Medicine, participating in the 2017-18 Truth Initiative Youth Activism Fellowship and organizing campaigns to raise awareness of changes in ECU’s campus tobacco policy.
Bowrey has served on the Truth Initiative board of directors since 2019.
